Kalkal Human Rights Development Organization KAHRDO), founded in 2013, is a women-led, non-profit organization addressing humanitarian crises and promoting human rights.

Over the years, KAHRDO has become one of the leading organizations in humanitarian response and human rights advocacy in Somalia. Our core areas of operation include: Human Rights Protection and Advocacy, Child Rights Protection and Advocacy, Advocacy to End Violence Against Women and Girls (EVAWG),Promotion of Socio-Economic Rights, Human Rights for Environmental and Climate Justice, Peacebuilding and Reconciliation, Youth and Women Empowerment, Democracy and Good Governance, Environmental Conservation and Climate Change Advocacy, Disability Rights Advocacy, General Protection Coordination, Education Support and Sponsorships for crisis-affected children.

We are seeking a dedicated and innovative Communication Officer to manage our communication strategy, raise the organization’s visibility, and enhance advocacy efforts. This position plays a key role in telling the stories of change, engaging stakeholders, and building strong relationships with communities and partners.

Job Description:

The Communication Officer will develop and implement communication strategies that amplify KAHRDO’s impact, support project visibility, and engage diverse audiences. The officer will oversee digital and traditional media channels, produce high-quality content, manage public relations, and support advocacy campaigns. This position requires creativity, strategic thinking, and the ability to effectively communicate KAHRDO’s mission and programs to a wide audience.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement communication strategies aligned with KAHRDO’s mission and projects.
  • Manage and maintain the organization’s website, social media platforms, and digital content.
  • Produce high-quality written, visual, and multimedia content, including newsletters, press releases, blog posts, photos, and videos.
  • Support advocacy campaigns, awareness-raising activities, and public engagement initiatives.
  • Capture and document project activities and success stories to highlight impact.
  • Build and maintain professional relationships with media outlets, partners, donors, and community stakeholders.
  • Ensure consistent organizational branding and messaging across all communication channels.
  • Provide guidance and support to project teams on communication and media-related activities.
  • Organize and support events, workshops, and campaigns to promote KAHRDO’s work.
  • Monitor and report on media coverage, digital engagement, and communication metrics.
  • Stay up-to-date with communication trends, tools, and best practices, integrating innovative approaches.

Skills Required:

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in English and Somali.
  • Strong experience in social media management, content creation, and digital storytelling.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Canva, Adobe Suite, or other design and media tools.
  • Experience in media relations, press release writing, and advocacy communications.
  • Ability to plan and manage multiple tasks, work under pressure, and meet tight deadlines.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and teamwork skills.
  • Creativity and strategic thinking to develop impactful communication campaigns.
  • Ability to engage and coordinate with partners, donors, media, and community stakeholders.

Educational Requirement:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mass communication, Journalism, Public Relations, Media Studies, or a related field.
  • Additional training or certification in digital communications, social media management, or multimedia production is an advantage.

Experience Requirement:

  • Minimum of 3-4 years of professional experience in communications, media, public relations, or advocacy.
  • Demonstrated experience working with NGOs, development, human rights, or community-based organizations.
  • Proven ability in creating, managing, and implementing communication strategies.
  • Experience in social media analytics, content planning, and stakeholder engagement is highly desirable.
